The 20-second answer

In a coaching offer doing $1M+ a month, a CSM might have 10 upgrade conversations a day. If 1 in 10 says yes and you earn $200 per upgrade, that's about $200 a day, $1,000 a week and roughly $4,300 a month in commission, on top of your base pay.

How the calculator works

The math is simple on purpose. Your commission depends on four things: how many clients you talk to who could upgrade, how many of them say yes, what you earn per upgrade and how many days you work.

Monthly commission = opportunities a day × upgrade rate × commission per upgrade × days a week × 4.33

We use 4.33 weeks per month (52 weeks divided by 12). The numbers are before tax and don't include your base salary.

What to enter: realistic numbers

The size of the offer you work in decides how many upgrade conversations you can have. These are the starting points we use, from running the back end of coaching offers. Change them to match your book.

Offer sizeUpgrade opportunities a dayWhy
$250K a month2 to 5Smaller book, fewer clients at the upgrade point
$500K a month5 to 8A full book, with a clear next program to offer
$1M+ a month10 to 15Large book, several programs to ascend into

For the upgrade rate, about 1 in 10 is a solid rate for a trained CSM. For commission, $200 per upgrade is a common middle value. Some companies pay a flat amount, others a percentage of the upgrade. For base pay and full compensation, see the CSM salary guide.

How to raise your upgrade rate

Look at the "What skill is worth" card above. The difference between an average CSM and a great one is rarely the number of clients. It's how many conversations turn into a yes. That comes down to a few skills:

  • Get clients to results first. Clients who win are the ones who upgrade. Onboarding and retention come before any upsell.
  • Spot the moment. The best time to talk about the next step is right after a win, not at the end of the contract.
  • Trust the offer. If you believe the next program helps them, the conversation stops feeling like selling.
  • Bring it up yourself. In many companies, nobody hands you the opportunity. If you don't mention it, nobody does.

These are exactly the skills we train inside the CSM Council community, with the Renewal Runway framework and the scripts top CSMs use. More on what hiring managers look for in what coaches look for in a CSM.

Why the size of the offer matters

Bigger offers have more clients, more programs to move into and more budget for commission. That's why working in the top 1% of coaching offers & agencies changes what a CSM can earn, even with the same skills. If you want to work in those offers, see how we hire and place CSMs.

Disclaimer. This calculator is an illustration of the math, not a promise of income. Real commission depends on the employer's plan, the offer, your book and your skill.

Frequently asked questions

How much commission does a client success manager make?

It depends on how many clients you talk to who could upgrade, how many say yes and what you earn per upgrade. In a $1M+ a month coaching offer, 10 upgrade conversations a day at a 10% upgrade rate and $200 per upgrade comes to about $4,300 a month on top of base pay. Use the calculator to try your own numbers.

Do client success managers get commission?

In many coaching businesses and agencies, yes. Pay is usually a base salary plus commission or bonuses tied to renewals, upgrades, retention or referrals. Some companies only pay commission if the CSM brings the opportunity up, which is why the skill matters.

What is a good upgrade rate for a CSM?

About 1 in 10 upgrade conversations turning into a yes is a solid rate for a trained CSM in a high-ticket coaching offer. It varies with the offer, the results clients get and how well the next step fits them.

What counts as an upgrade opportunity?

Any client you talk to who is at a point where a renewal, an upgrade to a bigger program or a next offer would genuinely help them. Most come from clients who are getting results.

Is this a promise of what I will earn?

No. It's an illustration of the math. Real earnings depend on the company's commission plan, the offer, your book and your skill. Always ask an employer how commission is calculated and what the on-target earnings assume.
